Wizkid, Ice Prince nominated for Bet Awards

Empire Mates Entertainment’s Wizkid and Chocolate City’s Ice Prince are the Nigerian nominees in the 2012 BET Awards’ Best International Act (Africa) category. The Nigerians will slug it out with Kenya’s Camp Mulla, South Africa’s Lira, Ghana’s Sarkodie and Malian revelation, Molobe. Interestingly, the category was jointly won by Nigerian music stars, Tuface Idibia and D’banj in 2011 while MI and P-Square did not win the previous year when they were also nominated for the award. Now, it is the turn of Ice Prince and Wizkid, two artistes that have done well individually since they debuted, to further hoist Nigeria’s flag on the international music scene. The latter especially has been a sensation across Nigeria and beyond, winning many local and international awards and getting signed on to Akon’s Convict Music label.

In the Best International Act category, Estelle, Labrinth, Emeli Sande, Sway and Wretch 32 are all nominated. After picking up four trophies in 2011, Chris Brown is up for three awards while rapper-producer, Kanye West, leads the nominees’ list with seven nods. He is followed closely by Lil Wayne with five. The group Maze featuring Frankie Beverly will receive a lifetime achievement award. Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj are due to perform at the event which holds on July 1st at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports and other fields of entertainment, the 11th edition will be hosted by highly rated actor, Samuel L Jackson.
