Ameobi shines As Super Eagles wallop Venezuela

he Super Eagles got their preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations off to an impressive start with a 3-1 victory over Venezuela in Miami, Florida Thursday morning.

Dynamo Kyiv striker Brown Ideye got Nigeria on the way to victory four minutes after the break when he latched on to a Solomon Kwanbe cross after good work from the outstanding Betis midfielder Nosa Igiebor.

Before the goal, Ideye’s combination with the returning Obafemi Martins gave the Venezuela defence problems, while Igiebor was pulling the strings in midfield.

Although the South Americans were giving as good as they were getting and came close to scoring, it was Nigeria who doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when Igiebor unleashed a spectacular 30-yard shot that stunned the Venezuelans.

Venezuela fought back gamely and got the reward their industry deserved when they pulled one back with 20 minutes left on the clock.

The goal made for a nervy finale and Venezuela pressed on for the equalizer, but it was Nigeria who got the back-breaking third goal when brilliant hold-up play from the debuting Shola Ameobi set up Ogeyi Onazi to rifle home from close range.
